Enhancing Veterinarians’ Skills in Early Detection of Foreign Animal Diseases: An Interactive & Immersive Learning Series

In response to the escalating threat of foreign animal diseases, a new interactive video series has been developed to train veterinarians in the early detection and diagnosis of these diseases, with the goal of preventing outbreaks before they occur. Utilizing StepStone technology, the series offers immersive, scenario-based learning modules that replicate real-world situations, enabling veterinarians to recognize clinical signs, perform accurate diagnostics, and implement effective biosecurity measures.

A focal point of the series is the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), particularly in light of the significant outbreaks in 2024. These modules guide veterinarians in identifying early symptoms, such as respiratory distress, neurological signs, and sudden mortality, in poultry. Interactive decision-making pathways allow learners to explore various diagnostic approaches and observe the outcomes of their choices, reinforcing the importance of prompt and accurate responses. The 2015 and 2024 HPAI outbreaks serve as critical case studies within the series.

In December 2024 alone, over 23 million birds were culled due to the virus, resulting in a national egg shortage and a 65% increase in egg prices, which soared from $2.52 per dozen in January 2024 to $4.15 by December.  This crisis underscores the severe economic repercussions of delayed disease detection, including livestock losses, trade restrictions, and financial strain on the poultry industry. By engaging with this interactive series, veterinarians are better equipped to prevent such outbreaks, thereby safeguarding the food supply chain and mitigating economic risks. The project emphasizes the vital role of early disease detection in maintaining animal health and ensuring the stability of global agriculture.
